What to expect from your brass jewelry pieces

What to expect from your brass jewelry pieces

Brass has been used in jewelry making since the beginning of time, and here at Forai some of our most beloved jewelry pieces are crafted from brass!  It is a durable and relatively inexpensive jewelry-making material, which makes it perfect for creating affordable, trendy and high-quality pieces.  However, its important to understand the limitations and downsides of brass, and know how to care for your pieces properly, to make sure you can get maximum enjoyment from wearing them.

Here is what you need to know:

Keep It Dry!!

One of the simplest ways to extend the life of your brass jewelry is to keep it dry.  Water is the enemy of brass.  Ever had your ear or fingers turn green after your jewelry got wet--that's because the metal contained brass! Brass can tarnish when exposed to moisture, so it’s essential to remove your jewelry before swimming, showering, hand-washing or any other activities where your jewelry could get wet. When you're not wearing your pieces, store them in a dry place, away from humidity and extreme temperature fluctuations. If your jewelry does get wet, make sure to dry it off with a soft cloth right away.

Be aware of its potential to cause allergic reactions

Brass is a metal alloy made from copper and zinc, and may contain nickel, which is why we no longer use it on the parts of earrings that have contact with ear piercings (typically the most sensitive spot for those with metal jewelry allergies).  Instead we use brass to create rings, bracelets, and necklace pendants, which are typically safe even for those with allergies and sensitivities to the components to brass.  However, it is something to be aware of when purchasing brass jewelry.

Polish Regularly

Even when you are careful to avoid exposing your brass jewelry to water, over time exposure to humidity in the air will cause your jewelry to slightly tarnish.  Thankfully, polishing or cleaning is a simple and quick way to restore the shine to your brass jewelry.

  • Polishing Cloth: For a quick shine, you can use a jewelry polishing cloth (like our favorite, the Sunshine Cloth) specifically designed for brass. These cloths are treated with a special solution that can remove tarnish and restore the metal's shine.

  • Homemade Brass Cleaner: If your jewelry has a heavier layer of tarnish, you can create a homemade brass cleaner by mixing equal parts vinegar and salt. Apply this mixture with a soft cloth, gently rubbing the tarnished areas, and then rinse with water and dry thoroughly.

Expect a patina over time

Unlike tarnish, brass jewelry will develop a patina over time that is not removable through polishing.  However, knowing and expecting this patina to develop can help you continue to enjoy your brass jewelry as the months and years pass.  How to tell the difference between tarnish and patina:

  1. Tarnish:
    • Appearance: Tarnish typically appears as a dull, discolored coating that is usually a grey, brown, or greenish color. It often forms as a result of oxidation, where the brass reacts with air, moisture, or chemicals.
    • Texture: Tarnish can sometimes have a slightly rough or uneven texture when you touch it.
    • Removability: Tarnish can often be removed by cleaning or polishing the jewelry, so if you gently buff the piece and it shines up again, it’s likely tarnish.
  2. Patina:
    • Appearance: Patina is a more natural, desirable aging effect, resulting in a rich, brown-tinted coloration, giving a vintage or antique effect.
    • Texture: Patina is typically smoother and more evenly distributed compared to tarnish.
    • Removability: Patina is more permanent and, in some cases, highly sought after for its aesthetic qualities. It usually doesn’t come off as easily as tarnish unless deliberately cleaned or removed.

Wear It Often

Although it may seem counterintuitive, wearing your brass jewelry regularly can actually help keep it in top condition. Brass jewelry is prone to tarnishing when exposed to air for long periods, but frequent wear can create a thin layer of natural oils from your skin that helps protect the metal.

Caring for your brass Forai jewelry pieces doesn't have to be difficult. By following these simple tips, you can keep your favorite pieces looking their best and prevent tarnish and damage. A little attention and care can ensure that your brass jewelry continues to shine for years.
